Tile Layout Calculator is a free, independent planning tool for anyone laying tile — professional tilers doing a quick material check, contractors quoting a job, and DIY renovators planning their first floor or backsplash.
Enter your room's length and width, your tile's length and width, and your grout line width, and the tool works out an effective tile footprint — the tile size plus grout on both sides, i.e. (tile length + grout) × (tile width + grout) — and divides your room area by that footprint, rounding up, to get the number of coverage tiles needed to cover the bare floor. It then applies your waste factor (10% by default, 15% for diagonal layouts to cover the extra angled cuts) and rounds up again to give the practical "tiles to buy" number. If you enter a coverage-per-box figure, it separately computes boxes needed as ceil(room area × (1 + waste) / coverage per box). Finally, it estimates a grout line length directly from the same tile grid rendered in the on-page canvas preview — summing the interior grid lines for straight and offset layouts, or an approximated clipped estimate for diagonal layouts — intended for sizing grout bags, not as an exact material list.
Anyone who needs a fast, realistic tile count before ordering material: a tiler double-checking a quote, a contractor scoping a job, or a homeowner trying to understand how many boxes to buy and what a straight, offset (brick), or diagonal layout will actually look like in their specific room before committing to one.
This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or produced in partnership with any tile, grout, or flooring manufacturer. The math is standard area and grid geometry, not a proprietary or manufacturer-specific method — the goal is a fast, transparent tool, not a substitute for a supplier's own take-off or an installer's professional judgment.
Every calculation, and the canvas layout preview, runs entirely in your browser — the room and tile numbers you enter are never sent to or stored on our servers. See the full privacy policy.
